Nature

Haaruskangas is a large boreal forest area in Kauhava. There are pines, lingonberries, Cetraria islandica, Cladonia stellaris and heathers. There are also some fir forest areas with neighbors, blueberries and mosses. There are also deciduous, which have birch and alders.

Many animals live in Haarus. Mammal species are brown bear, Finnish forest reindeer, moose, otter, hedgehog, red squirrel, shrew and yellow-necked mouse. Bird life includes, for example, swan, crane, black grouse, raven, goldeneye, sparrow hawk, cuckoo, woodpecker and chaffinch. Other animals are vipers, wood ants and mosquitoes.

In Lake Haarusjärvi shores’ rampant grows nidify many animals and birds like flying squirrels, black woodpeckers, and hazel grousers. There are living also three frog species; common frog, moor frog and common toad on Lake Haarusjärvi.

History

Area sights tells about Haarus’s history from the Ice Age to these days. Haaruskangas’s sand esker built up during the ice age. People have lived in the Stone Age on the sand esker and they have hunted with trap pits.

Later there has burned tar and made charcoal in Haarus. There has had croft life around the turn of the century 1900 at Ellanvainio. Area’s ponds are was born as a result of sand extraction.
